Microsoft is giving its compact computing lineup a boost by updating the twelve inch Surface Pro and thirteen inch Surface Laptop with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X2 Plus chips. While the external designs remain identical to last year’s versions, the internal upgrades focus heavily on speed and efficiency. These second edition devices arrive on October 13th, sporting six core processors that Microsoft claims will significantly improve graphics performance and accelerate local AI tasks via a beefed up neural processing unit.
However, these technical gains come with a steeper entry price. In what some might call a memory shakeup, Microsoft has eliminated the base eight gigabyte RAM options entirely. Both machines now start with sixteen gigabytes of RAM, which pushes the starting price of the Surface Pro up to eleven hundred forty nine dollars and ninety nine cents from its previous seven hundred ninety nine dollar mark. Similarly, the Surface Laptop now starts at eleven hundred ninety nine dollars and ninety nine cents, reflecting both the chip upgrade and the increased minimum memory requirements.
The real world benefit of these changes shows up most clearly in battery longevity. Users can expect roughly an extra hour of web browsing on the tablet version and up to two additional hours on the laptop, bringing its total potential runtime to eighteen hours. While screen resolutions stay consistent across both lines, there is a modest bump in peak brightness from four hundred to five hundred nits. Connectivity also gets a modern touch with support for Wi Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, while port selections remain unchanged from previous iterations.
Despite these improvements, some may find it surprising that Microsoft opted against adding haptic trackpads to these smaller models, especially since such technology is already present in their Ultra line_and newer Windows 11 software features designed for them. For those concerned with aesthetics, black returns as a primary color choice alongside platinum silver and violet options. Commercial buyers will have access to both units, including an optional five G configuration specifically for the portable Surface Pro.
